BYO HDD Kits

A BYO HDD kit is supplied without a hard drive, so you choose the capacity that matches your retention need — fit the surveillance-grade drive that suits your camera count and how many days of footage you want to keep. It's often the smarter buy when you want control over storage, or already have a suitable surveillance-grade drive on hand. Fitting a drive is a few screws inside the NVR, which formats it on first start.

Security Cameras Australia stocks the BYO HDD kit range. Every kit is genuine Australian stock with full manufacturer warranty, and footage records locally to the NVR — you own it, with no monthly subscription.

For a one-purchase option that records out of the box, see the HDD pre-installed kits; for drives, see CCTV hard drives.

Why a BYO HDD kit

  • You control the storage. Fit the exact capacity that matches your retention target, rather than the size that happens to be pre-installed.
  • Use a drive you already have. If you've got a suitable surveillance-grade drive, BYO saves paying for one twice.
  • Records locally, no subscription. Footage stays on the NVR on your premises — you own it, with no monthly fee.

Sizing your drive

Capacity depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate and target retention. Rough guide with H.265+: ~4 TB for ~14 days on four 6MP cameras, ~8 TB for ~30 days; 4K and more cameras need more. Surveillance-grade only — Seagate SkyHawk / SkyHawk AI or WD Purple, built for the 24/7 write cycle that kills desktop drives. Tell us your configuration and we'll size it. See CCTV hard drives.

BYO or pre-installed?

BYO gives control over capacity; pre-installed gives the simplest one-purchase, record-out-of-the-box option. The honest answer: BYO if you have a specific retention target or a drive on hand; pre-installed if you just want it working.

What's in a BYO HDD kit

  • Matched cameras and a PoE NVR with built-in ports.
  • Mounting hardware and a quick-start guide.
  • You supply: the surveillance-grade hard drive, Cat6 cable, a monitor and your internet router.

Frequently Asked Questions about BYO HDD Kits

Why buy a kit without a hard drive?

So you control the storage. A BYO-HDD kit ships without the drive, letting you fit the exact capacity that matches your retention target and budget — rather than accepting the size that happens to come pre-installed. It's the smarter buy when you know how many days of footage you want to keep, or you already have a suitable surveillance-grade drive.

What size drive do I need?

It depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate and how many days you want to keep. As a rough guide with H.265+ compression: around 4 TB covers ~14 days on four 6MP cameras; around 8 TB covers ~30 days; 4K and more cameras need more. Tell us your camera count, resolution and target retention and we'll size it precisely.

Which drives should I use?

Surveillance-grade drives only — Seagate SkyHawk / SkyHawk AI or WD Purple. They're built for the constant 24/7 write load of CCTV; standard desktop drives aren't and fail early in this use. See the CCTV hard drives range, where capacities are listed against typical retention.

When should I just buy a pre-installed kit instead?

If you want the simplest one-purchase option and don't need a specific capacity, a pre-installed kit ships ready to record with the drive already fitted and configured. BYO is for when you want control over storage. See the HDD pre-installed kits.

Is fitting the drive myself difficult?

No — fitting a drive is a few screws and a cable inside the NVR, and the recorder formats it on first start. The bigger job is the camera cabling: each camera runs on a single Cat6 cable from the NVR (PoE). Single-storey installs are a sensible DIY job; two-storey and commercial sites are usually better done professionally. We can refer a licensed installer.
