Why 3MP isn't a standard tier
The current resolution ladder for IP cameras runs 2MP (Full HD 1080p) → 4MP → 6MP → 8MP (4K) → 12MP for specialist use. 3MP exists historically and on specific models, but the current product range standardised on 4MP as the residential default — 4MP costs little more than 3MP, delivers meaningfully more identification headroom, and benefits from broader product range and longer firmware support.
What we recommend instead
- For short-range and budget installs: step down to 2MP. The cost saving over 3MP is modest and the spec is well-supported.
- For typical residential and small commercial: step up to 4MP. The standard, with the broadest product range, AcuSense and ColorVu options, and best long-term firmware support.
- For higher detail: 6MP or 8MP / 4K.
