Axis Modular F-Series Cameras

The Axis F-Series is the modular line — cameras where the sensor unit is physically separated from the main unit (encoder and connectivity), connected by a thin cable. The split design enables installs that single-piece cameras can't do: the tiny sensor unit fits in spaces where a full camera body wouldn't (vehicle dashboards, marine cabin trims, concealed wall niches, custom retail displays), while the main unit sits in a more accessible position with the cabling, network connection, and full processing. F-Series is specified for vehicle and mobile applications, marine installs, custom integrations, museum and art display contexts where discretion matters, and specialised installs where standard form factors don't fit the install geometry.

Security Cameras Australia is an authorised Axis dealer. For F-Series installs we recommend talking to our team — these are specialised installs where the application geometry and integration determine the right configuration.

What modular means in practice

A standard IP camera has the sensor (lens, imager) and the main unit (encoder, network interface, storage, power) in a single housing. F-Series splits these:

  • Sensor unit — small, discreet, contains the lens and image sensor. Mounted at the position where the image needs to be captured.
  • Main unit — handles encoding, network connection, PoE power, edge storage. Mounted at a position with cable access and power.
  • Cable — thin flexible cable connects sensor to main unit. Typical run length 8-15 m depending on model.

The practical advantage: install positions where a full single-piece camera wouldn't fit. The sensor is small enough to conceal in cabinetry, fit through a small hole, mount on a vehicle dashboard, or sit in a custom display.

Where F-Series earns its keep

Vehicle and mobile

Buses, taxis, emergency vehicles, fleet vehicles, mobile command units. Sensor on the dashboard or windscreen, main unit in the boot or under-seat with vehicle power. Cabling routed through vehicle conduit.

Marine and harsh environments

Sensor mounted externally in a marine-rated housing, main unit inside the cabin protected from weather. Useful for vessels, offshore installations, and harsh-environment installs where exposing only the small sensor reduces failure surface.

Discreet and concealed

Museum and art display contexts, high-end retail, custom commercial fit-outs. Sensor concealed behind millwork, in display cases, or in custom architectural features; main unit in service spaces.

Specialised industrial

Industrial process monitoring where the sensor needs to be in a hazardous or inaccessible position. Specific industrial F-Series variants with specialised sensor options (high-speed, high-resolution, etc.) for process control and quality inspection contexts.

Custom integration

OEM and custom integrators building cameras into their own products — kiosks, ATMs, custom enclosures. F-Series ships as the camera component for integration rather than a finished standalone product.

Specifying an F-Series install

Cable run length

Sensor-to-main-unit cable runs typically 8-15 m. Confirm against the specific model spec — some support longer runs with appropriate extension. Longer runs typically aren't possible at full image quality due to signal integrity at the cable.

Sensor variants

F-Series sensor units cover various optical configurations — different focal lengths, sensor sizes, day/night switching, IR options. Confirm the sensor variant suits the install distance and lighting.

Main unit selection

F-Series main units typically support 1 or 4 sensors per main unit — single-sensor for one-position installs, four-sensor for multi-position installs sharing a single main unit and network connection. Useful for vehicles covering multiple positions or installs covering several adjacent areas.

Power and network

Main unit powered by PoE or 12 V DC (vehicle installs). Network connection from the main unit, not the sensor.

Integration considerations

F-Series integrates with VMS, NVRs, and analytics in the same way as standard Axis cameras — the modular split is invisible to the network and management layer. ONVIF compliance, Axis VAPIX support, and integration with Milestone, Genetec, AXIS Camera Station, Hanwha WAVE.

Frequently Asked Questions about Axis Modular F-Series Cameras

When does an F-Series modular camera make sense over a standard single-piece camera?

When the install geometry doesn't fit a standard camera. Specific scenarios: vehicle and mobile installs (sensor on dashboard, main unit in boot), marine (sensor external, main unit in cabin), discreet/concealed (sensor hidden in millwork, main unit in service space), custom integrations (camera built into kiosks, ATMs, custom enclosures), and specialised industrial process monitoring. For standard wall-mount and ceiling-mount positions, single-piece cameras are simpler and cheaper.

How far can the sensor be from the main unit?

Typically 8-15 m on the cable, depending on the specific F-Series model. Some variants support longer runs with appropriate extension. Longer than the supported length isn't usually possible at full image quality due to signal integrity. For positions needing longer separation, multiple F-Series main units or a different camera type may be the right call.

Can one F-Series main unit support multiple sensors?

Yes — selected F-Series main units support 4 sensors per main unit, sharing a single network connection and PoE budget. Useful for vehicles covering multiple positions (forward, side, rear), or installs covering several adjacent zones from a single comms-cabinet position. Multi-sensor main units appear as multiple camera channels on the VMS.

Will F-Series work with our existing Axis VMS or Milestone?

Yes — F-Series integrates identically to standard Axis cameras at the VMS layer. ONVIF compliance, Axis VAPIX support, integration with Milestone XProtect, Genetec Security Center, AXIS Camera Station, Hanwha WAVE. The modular split is invisible to the management and VMS layer — the camera appears as a standard Axis network camera.

Is F-Series suitable for vehicle CCTV?

Yes — vehicle CCTV is a primary F-Series application. Sensors on dashboards, windscreens, or side mounting positions; main unit in the boot, under-seat, or in a dedicated AV space; cable routed through vehicle conduit. 12 V DC power from the vehicle electrical. For fleet management installs, F-Series often pairs with mobile recording (NVR or on-camera SD) and 4G/cellular uplink to a fleet management VMS.
