TP-Link Tapo

Tapo is TP-Link's home Wi-Fi camera range — affordable, app-controlled, and set up in about 10 minutes with a phone and a router. It's the right choice when you want to see what happens at the front door, the side gate, or at a holiday house while you're away, and you don't want to run cables or hire an installer. The trade-off vs a wired (PoE) system is that Tapo cameras depend on your home Wi-Fi, and the practical ceiling per property is around 6–8 cameras.

Security Cameras Australia is an authorised TP-Link supplier. Every Tapo camera is genuine Australian stock with full manufacturer warranty, and you can talk to someone if a camera won't connect or you need help choosing between a Tapo C200, C220, C320WS, C420 or C720 — they each do something different.

Note: TP-Link products are not currently on Australian government NDAA-compliant procurement lists. Tapo is a consumer / residential range — for any commercial or government installation that requires NDAA compliance, see our NDAA-compliant range instead.

Key features of the Tapo range

  • Wi-Fi setup — no Cat6 cabling, no NVR, no installer required. Up in 10 minutes.
  • Tapo mobile app (iOS and Android) for live view, two-way talk, motion alerts and clip playback.
  • Free local recording to a microSD card (up to 512 GB on most models) — no subscription required for basic recording.
  • Optional Tapo Care cloud subscription for AI detection (person, vehicle, pet) and 30-day cloud history — useful but not required.
  • Indoor and outdoor models — outdoor cameras are IP65/66 weather-rated for Australian conditions.
  • Two-way audio on most models — talk to a delivery driver or a visitor from your phone.
  • Night vision — infrared on the standard models, full-colour spotlight on premium models like the C720.
  • Works with Apple HomeKit (on supported models), Google Home and Amazon Alexa.

Which Tapo camera is right for your home

Indoor pan-tilt (e.g. C200, C220) — kids' room, living room, pet monitoring. Pans 360°, tilts up and down.

Indoor fixed (e.g. C110) — single-angle coverage, the budget option.

Outdoor weatherproof (e.g. C320WS, C420) — front door, back yard, side gate. The C420 is battery-powered for placement freedom where there's no power outlet nearby.

Outdoor with spotlight + siren (e.g. C720) — high-deterrent for problem spots, full-colour night vision via the spotlight, and a built-in siren.

Battery or solar options for sites with no power outlet.

For a typical Australian home, an indoor pan-tilt plus two outdoor fixed cameras is a solid starter setup. We're happy to talk it through.

When Tapo is enough — and when to step up to a wired system

Tapo is the right call when you want to see what happens, you have decent home Wi-Fi, and you're covering up to about 6 cameras at a single property. Step up to a wired (PoE) system with an NVR when:

  • You need more than 6–8 cameras at one address.
  • Your Wi-Fi is genuinely flaky (signal issues, lots of contention) — wired removes the network as a single point of failure.
  • You need long-distance identification (Tapo tops at 2K — professional cameras run 4MP–8MP).
  • You want 24/7 continuous recording without ever paying a subscription — possible on Tapo with a large microSD card, but easier with an NVR + hard drive on a wired system.

Our 4-camera AcuSense kits are the natural next step.

Browse the Tapo range below, or talk to us about which model fits your home. If you want to install one or two cameras yourself today, we'll point you to the right model. If you actually want a 6+ camera system covering a whole property, we'll suggest a wired kit instead — Tapo isn't the right answer at that scale.

Frequently Asked Questions about TP-Link Tapo

Is Tapo easy to set up myself?

For one or two cameras, yes — installation is a 10-minute job per camera. Download the Tapo app, scan the QR code on the camera, connect it to your home Wi-Fi, mount it. No cables to drill, no NVR to configure. If you can set up a smart plug or a Wi-Fi speaker, you can install a Tapo camera.

Do I need to pay a subscription?

No — basic use is subscription-free. Every Tapo camera records to a microSD card (your supply, up to 512 GB on most models), and the Tapo app gives you live view, two-way talk, motion alerts and playback at no cost. The optional Tapo Care subscription adds 30-day cloud history and smarter AI detection (person, vehicle, pet) — useful if you don't want to retrieve a microSD card to review footage, but not required.

Will Tapo work if my Wi-Fi drops out?

The camera keeps recording to its microSD card even if Wi-Fi is unavailable, so you don't lose footage during an outage. What you lose is the live view, the app alerts, and (for Tapo Care subscribers) the cloud backup. Everything reconnects automatically when Wi-Fi recovers. If your Wi-Fi is genuinely flaky, a wired PoE system is a more honest answer.

How many Tapo cameras can I run at one address?

Practically around 6–8 — that's where home Wi-Fi bandwidth and channel contention start to push back. If you need more than that, you're better off on a wired NVR-based system. We'll talk through the options if you're undecided.

Are Tapo cameras weatherproof?

Outdoor Tapo models (C320WS, C420, C720 and similar) are IP65 or IP66 rated for rain and dust, and specified for outdoor temperatures across Australian conditions. Indoor models (C200, C220, C110) are not weather-rated — they're for inside use only. Check the IP rating on the specific model spec for your install location.
