How a Hikvision video intercom system works
A complete system has three components plus optional smartphone access:
- Outdoor door station. Mounted at the entrance — door, gate, lobby. Includes camera (HD video), microphone, speaker, call button. Commercial and multi-tenant variants add PIN keypad, RFID reader, or Bluetooth/mobile credential reader for keyless entry. Door release output controls a magnetic lock or strike.
- Indoor monitor(s). One or more touchscreen monitors inside the property. Visitor calls ring the monitor; the occupant sees the visitor, talks, and releases the door if appropriate. Multiple monitors can be deployed (e.g., one at the front door, one in the master bedroom).
- Hik-Connect mobile app. Calls forward to a smartphone when the indoor monitor is unattended. Visitor calls when you're not home; you answer from your phone, see and talk to the visitor, release the door if needed.
- Optional NVR integration. The door station records to a Hikvision NVR — every visitor caller is captured as a recorded event for later review.
IP vs 2-wire — which architecture
Two cable architectures cover Hikvision's range, and the right choice depends on whether you're cabling fresh or working with existing wiring.
- IP (Cat6 over PoE). Modern standard for new installs. Single Cat6 cable per door station and per indoor monitor, all PoE-powered from a central PoE switch. Cleanest topology, easiest expansion, full integration with the broader Hikvision IP camera ecosystem (door station appears as a camera channel on the NVR).
- 2-wire (IP over twisted pair). Designed for retrofit installs where existing 2-wire intercom cabling is already in place — apartment blocks with legacy intercom risers, older residential properties with twin-flex run from door to monitor. Hikvision's 2-wire system multiplexes IP data, audio and power over the same 2 wires, letting you replace the old analog intercom without re-cabling.
For new installs, IP is cleaner. For retrofit installs preserving existing cabling, 2-wire saves the labour cost of running new cable.
Which install pattern fits your site
- Single residential villa or house — one door station at the entrance, one or two indoor monitors. Smartphone forwarding for when no-one's home. Hik-Connect app handles remote answering, door release, visitor history.
- Multi-tenant apartment building — lobby door station with directory and call buttons (or PIN keypad and RFID/mobile credentials), one indoor monitor per apartment. Central management server for tenant directory updates. NVR records all lobby callers.
- Commercial multi-entrance — front door station with receptionist call button, side or staff door stations with RFID/mobile entry. Indoor monitors at reception and security desks. Integration with broader CCTV and access control.
- Gated estate or property — pole-mount door station at the gate, indoor monitors at the house. Gate-release output triggers the gate motor. Smartphone forwarding for guest entry when the owner's away.
What to confirm before specifying
- Cabling architecture. New install (IP / Cat6) or retrofit (2-wire)? Confirm before selecting door station and monitor model — they're paired by architecture.
- Door-release output. Maglock, electric strike, gate motor — confirm voltage and dry/wet contact requirements of the lock/motor against the door station's output spec.
- Entry credentials. Call button only, PIN, RFID, mobile credentials — multi-credential commercial units cost more but suit access-control integration.
- Indoor monitor count. One per dwelling minimum; two or more for larger residential layouts where the front door is far from the main living areas.
- NVR integration. Confirm the NVR model supports door-station recording (most current Hikvision NVRs do, with door station appearing as a camera channel).
- Power. IP door stations and monitors typically PoE-powered; 2-wire systems use a dedicated power supply at the rack end of the riser.
