Cat 6 cable

Cat 6 is the default ethernet cable for IP camera installs in Australia. It carries gigabit data and 100W PoE++ across runs up to 100 metres, which covers 95% of home and commercial CCTV cable runs without needing higher-grade cable. For the 5% that won't (long runs over 100 metres, EMI-heavy environments, multi-gigabit backbone runs), Cat 6a or fibre-to-copper conversion is the right answer — talk to us before specifying.

What to look for when picking Cat 6

• Solid copper conductor (not CCA — copper-clad aluminium) for PoE reliability and AS/NZS compliance
• Shielded (STP, F/UTP) for runs near mains cables, fluorescent ballasts, or motor loads
• Unshielded (UTP) for everything else — cheaper and easier to terminate
• Snagless boots on patch cables for camera-side terminations
• PVC for indoor, LSZH or polyethylene for plenum and outdoor
