Axis P-Series Cameras

The Axis P-Series is the performance tier of the Axis camera range — the workhorse line for outdoor commercial, retail, light industrial and professional installs where reliability, image quality and analytics support all matter, but the install doesn't demand the top-tier Q-Series feature set. P-Series cameras combine Axis's Lightfinder 2.0 low-light technology, Forensic WDR (wide dynamic range for high-contrast scenes), and on-camera AXIS Object Analytics for human and vehicle classification. The form factor range covers turret (P32 series), bullet (P14 series), dome (P32 and P33 series) and PTZ (P56 series), at resolutions from 2MP through 4K. NDAA §889 compliant, ONVIF certified, integrates cleanly with all major VMS platforms (Milestone XProtect, Genetec Security Center, AXIS Camera Station, Hanwha WAVE).

Security Cameras Australia is an authorised Axis dealer. Every P-Series camera is genuine Australian Axis stock with full manufacturer warranty.

Where P-Series sits in the Axis range

The Axis camera range splits into four tiers — understanding which tier suits your install is the first specification decision:

  • M-Series — cost-optimised, indoor and basic outdoor. The right choice for budget-constrained installs and high-volume residential/light-commercial deployments.
  • P-Series — performance tier. The workhorse choice for most commercial and professional outdoor installs. Lightfinder 2.0, Forensic WDR, Object Analytics. The most common Axis spec for commercial.
  • Q-Series — premium tier. Highest spec — advanced analytics, top-end low-light, premium build. Specified where the install needs the best Axis can offer.
  • F-Series — modular, sensor unit separated from main unit. Discreet and concealed installs.

For most commercial outdoor installs (offices, retail anchors, warehousing, school perimeter, healthcare facilities), P-Series is the right tier — delivers professional-grade image quality and analytics at a meaningful cost saving over Q-Series.

What's in the P-Series range

Turret cameras (P32 series)

Compact turret form factor for general perimeter and entry positions. Fixed lens or motorised varifocal options. The most common P-Series form factor for typical outdoor commercial.

Bullet cameras (P14 series)

Long-range outdoor bullets for fence line, carpark, dock face, long perimeter. Varifocal lens options for matching focal length to install distance. IR illumination at typically 40-80 m range.

Dome cameras (P32, P33 series)

Vandalism-resistant dome cameras for outdoor commercial, customer-facing positions, and discreet outdoor installs. P33 series adds higher vandalism rating and harsh-environment options.

PTZ cameras (P56 series)

Performance-tier PTZ with optical zoom typically 25-32×, auto-tracking, AXIS Object Analytics. For active wide-area perimeter and yard monitoring.

P-Series feature set

Lightfinder 2.0 (low-light colour)

Axis's low-light technology — keeps cameras in usable colour at light levels where standard cameras switch to black-and-white IR or noise out entirely. Important for night-time identification (colour evidence of clothing, vehicle, scene).

Forensic WDR (wide dynamic range)

Multi-exposure HDR for scenes with high contrast — bright background with dark foreground (looking out from a foyer into a sunlit forecourt, or a dimly-lit room with a bright window). Standard cameras blow out the highlights or lose the shadows; Forensic WDR retains both.

AXIS Object Analytics

On-camera human and vehicle classification. Filters motion alerts to humans/vehicles only, dramatically cutting false alerts from weather, animals, and environmental events. Comparable to Hikvision AcuSense functionally.

Zipstream compression

Axis's H.264/H.265 implementation that intelligently compresses non-relevant areas of the scene more aggressively — typically halves the bandwidth and storage for the same usable image quality.

Edge storage

microSD slot for local recording — useful as fallback storage when network connectivity drops, or for VMS architectures using camera-side storage.

NDAA and procurement context

Axis is NDAA §889 compliant — the right choice for federal procurement, state government contracts, and any procurement context restricting Chinese-manufactured hardware. P-Series carries the full NDAA-positive status across the range.

VMS integration

P-Series integrates cleanly with all major VMS platforms via ONVIF Profile S, G, T and Q:

  • Milestone XProtect — full driver-level integration.
  • Genetec Security Center — native integration with full analytics surface.
  • AXIS Camera Station — Axis's own VMS, optimised for the Axis camera range.
  • Hanwha Wisenet WAVE — ONVIF integration covering streaming and basic events.
  • Other ONVIF-compliant platforms across the broader VMS market.

How to choose between P-Series models

Four axes:

1. Form factor. Turret for general perimeter; bullet for long-range outdoor; dome for vandalism-resistant or customer-facing; PTZ for active wide-area.

2. Resolution. 2-4MP for general; 5-8MP for higher detail or larger zones; 4K for top-end detail.

3. Lens. Fixed for known field of view; motorised varifocal for adjustable angle without re-mounting.

4. Environmental rating. IP66 standard outdoor; IP67 for wash-down or high-exposure; IK10 for vandalism-resistant; extended temperature range for hot or cold environments.

Frequently Asked Questions about Axis P-Series Cameras

What's the difference between Axis P-Series and Q-Series?

Tier and feature spec. P-Series is the performance/workhorse tier — full professional feature set (Lightfinder 2.0, Forensic WDR, Object Analytics) at the price point most commercial installs land at. Q-Series is the premium tier — Axis's top spec, advanced analytics, premium low-light and WDR, often higher resolution and frame rate, specified where the install demands the best. For most commercial outdoor: P-Series is right-sized. For top-tier installs where the spec ceiling matters: Q-Series.

Is Axis P-Series NDAA-compliant for government procurement?

Yes — Axis is NDAA §889 compliant across the full P-Series range. Suitable for federal contracts, state government procurement, education-sector contracts with NDAA restrictions, and any procurement context excluding Chinese-manufactured hardware. We provide tender documentation including NDAA compliance statements for procurement processes.

Will Axis P-Series integrate with Milestone XProtect / Genetec Security Center?

Yes — full integration with Milestone XProtect, Genetec Security Center, AXIS Camera Station, Hanwha Wisenet WAVE, and other ONVIF-compliant VMS platforms. Integration depth covers streaming, recording, event triggers, PTZ control, and the on-camera analytics output (Object Analytics events surface in the VMS event log). For specific integration depth on your VMS version, confirm before specifying — Axis maintains driver compatibility lists per VMS partner.

What does Lightfinder 2.0 actually do?

Axis's low-light technology — combines a wide-aperture lens, low-noise sensor, and image processing tuned to retain colour at light levels where standard cameras either go black-and-white via IR or noise the image out entirely. Practical outcome: P-Series cameras stay in usable colour at ambient light levels (residential streets with normal street lighting, dimly-lit retail interiors, urban perimeter) where standard cameras would degrade. Comparable functionally to Hikvision ColorVu but with different technology stack and lower reliance on supplementary white light.

How does AXIS Object Analytics compare to Hikvision AcuSense?

Same functional goal (on-camera human/vehicle classification to filter motion alerts), different implementations. Object Analytics runs on the Axis camera's ARTPEC processor; AcuSense runs on Hikvision's chipset. Both deliver substantial false-alert reduction in outdoor positions. Object Analytics integrates natively with all major VMS platforms via Axis's analytics framework; AcuSense's deeper integration is primarily with Hikvision NVRs (AcuSense Pro NVR-side indexing). For multi-brand installs running on an open VMS, both are solid; for procurement-restricted contexts requiring NDAA, Axis Object Analytics is the call.
